Research gets big boost one year after Kobe earthquake

Article Abstract:

Japan has expanded its earthquake research program with $159 million in new funding. A high priority is financing an expansion of the seismic observation network. The new Earthquake Research Promotion Office of the Science and Technology Agency will oversee the programs.

Is Japan a step behind on genome?

Article Abstract:

Japan is about to begin funding four research groups that will work on small-scale projects to sequence limited locations of some human chromosomes. However, a larger-scale project comparable to genome efforts in other countries is unlikely to be approved.

New funding helps MITI reform labs

Article Abstract:

The budget for the 15 national laboratories that are run by MITI's Agency of Industrial Science and Technology will double in 1997 to $64.5 million. Important changes will be made in hiring scientists and awarding grants to improve research quality.
