NASA mission gets down to earth

Article Abstract:

The EOS, a multi-satellite project aimed at collecting data on the condition of the planet to aid future policy makers, is losing the support of both Congress and scientists. NASA is re-focusing research goals toward short-term effects and away from the global-change research.

DOE to industry: so long, partner

Article Abstract:

The DOE is backing away from Cooperative Research and Development Agreements between its weapons labs and industry after a negative assessment of their value and budget cuts by Congress. The program began in 1990 and reached its height in 1994 with 185 agreements.

Five-year plan squeezes R&D

Article Abstract:

A long-term budget projection under the budget agreement between the Clinton administration and Congress has no provisions for increases in science funding from 1998 to 2002. The plan will decrease research spending when inflation is considered.
