Universities struggle with the legacy of Apartheid

Article Abstract:

South African universities are divided along racial lines. During Apartheid, black universities were crippled due to receiving less than their fair share of research funding. When Apartheid ended, some proposed closing the black universities or limiting them to undergraduate education.

Elite science in a poor country

Article Abstract:

Science policy in South Africa is under revision. Scientists are both hopeful and fearful. In the past, science progressed relatively independently of industry and social problems. Future funding of science will depend on its ability to improve the quality of life for the majority.

South African research comes in from the cold

Article Abstract:

South Africa's political isolation during the 1970s and 1980s created problems for many scientists. Because of Apartheid, scientists were banned from attending conferences in many Third World countries and could not publish in some international journals.
