Education for an environmental job

Article Abstract:

The incongruity between the traditional undergraduate curricula and the job skills required by environmental employers is discussed. An enumeration of the several factors that affect this issue are presented. With this recognition, a set of principles to guide the development and subsequent operation of an environmental science program are also discussed. Depth and breadth, knowledgeable and skilled course content, flexibility and adaptability of the environmental program are asserted as the necessary requirement for its success.

Chelyabinsk: environmental affairs in a Russian city

Article Abstract:

The concentration of large industrial enterprises in small geographical areas is one feature of the former Soviet economy. Chelyabinsk, located in the Ural Mountains, is an example of this industrial city. Its environment is now extremely polluted as a result of industrial superannuation. The regional Soviet passed a series of emergency measures with an estimated cost of 400 million for the abatement of the region's problems. Western technical and financial assistance are recognized as crucial for this effort.

EPA's environmental monitoring methods index

Article Abstract:

The EPA's Environmental Monitoring Methods Index (EMMI) is powerful tool for the management and evaluation of environmentally significant analytes. Developed under the supervision of the Environmental Monitoring Management Council, EMMI runs on a personal computer and is capable of giving detailed information on analytes present in the EPA's environmentally significant lists. EMMI can also be interconnected with other databases that could provide relevant information.
