Electrochemical dechlorination of 4-chlorophenol to phenol

Article Abstract:

An investigation into the ability of metals to dechlorinate certain toxic volatile organic compounds has resulted in the use of palladium in potentiostatic and galvanostatic electrolysis to effect dechlorination. Dechlorination of 4-chlorophenol to phenol was effected by running the compound through an electrolytic process wherein the electrodes were coated with palladium. This innovation allowed for faster dissociation of chlorine from the compound. This may be due to the ability of palladium to intercalate hydrogen in its lattice. The hydrogen being responsible in binding the organic base and liberating chlorine as an ion in the solution.

X-ray photoelectron spectra of the palladium-iron bimetallic surface used for the rapid dechlorination of chlorinated organic environmental contaminants

Article Abstract:

The reactive surface of palladized Fe was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectra to determine the mechanisms that mediate its dechlorination in aqueous solutions. The reactive surface of the palladized iron is composed of FeO(OH) with intermediate oxide layers that exhibit 1:5 or 1:3 iron to oxygen ratio. The palladium molecules of the iron foil exhibited elevated oxidation states when exposed to a palladizing solution of K2PdCl6.

Rapid dechlorination of polychlorinated biphenyls on the surface of a Pd/Fe bimetallic system

Article Abstract:

A method for removing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from the environment is described. The process involves dechlorination of a methanol-water solution containing all the congeners of PCBs at ambient temperatures on the surface of a lead-iron bimetallic system. The method is expected to improve the remediation of water and soils contaminated with PCBs.
