Recent work on human altruism and evolution

Article Abstract:

The conflict between human altruism and evolution can be approached using strategies of elimination or reconciliation. The attempt to reconcile the two ideas seems more promising than the effort to eliminate one of the assumptions leading to the paradox. Strategies of reconciliation include regarding altruism as a vestige, a by-product or a continuing adaptation. The most valid theories appear to be those that regard altruism either as a by-product of selection for conformity or as an adaptive trait in its own right.
