Electrooptics

Article Abstract:

Research continues concerning the potential applications of electrooptic technology. Electrooptics uses fiber-optic cables that reduce the occurrence of electric interference and signal distortion. They also use light pulses which increase the available bandwidth, allowing for more information to be carried down an optical cable. Electrooptic technology has been used in various military applications, such as night sights and image intensifiers. Non-military uses include thermal imaging detectors for firefighters and laser surgery for noninvasive medical procedures.

Soft launches

Article Abstract:

The Farnborough Air Show always showcases traditional displays of aviation artistry, in terms of design and hardware. However, the Sep 1998 Farnborough Air Show was a showcase of more than aviation hardware as new software technologies, such as a voice-actuated command system and an in-flight automated control, were launched. Other software newly developed or under process of development include flight-deck display devices that make flying safer and easier, or prolong the aircraft's operational usefulness.

Life in the fast lane

Article Abstract:

Roads are becoming more congested and a team in the Transportation Research Group of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the University of Southampton have been studying vehicle to vehicle communications systems for use in convoys. Convoy operations were simulated on a Fuzzy Logic Motorway Simulation Model (FLOSIM), and convoy operations were found to significantly improve traffic flow.
