Energy unleashed

Article Abstract:

The $53-million Summersville Hydroelectric Project is one of the first new hydroelectric installations in the US since the 1980s. The project commenced in Feb 1999 and will be completed in Dec 2000, when it will begin to generate 217 million kWh of electricity annually for approximately 50,000 homes. The project is situated in the Gauley River, a confined site which posted significant construction challenge in terms of vehicular access. The plant is expected to provide a clean, reliable source of electric power without degrading air, water and land quality as well as the recreational activities of the Gauley River.

Environmental impact statements reach Web

Article Abstract:

Harrisburg, PA-based engineering firm Skelly and Loy, West Virginia Division of Highways and Federal Highway Administration have collaborated to develop a website, which featured the draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Elkins Bypass project in West Virginia. The website enables officials and the public to access portions of the 387-page document. It also eliminated the need to make thousands of copies for distribution among various government agencies and project engineers.
