Strains of Phytophthora infestans, a fungus which caused the potato famine in Europe during the mid-1840s, have been reported to spread in farms all over the world. The fungus, first traced in Toluca Valley, Mexico, is resistant to metalaxyl, rendering it impervious to conventional pesticides.
