English lock-up devices may solve retrofit riddle

Article Abstract:

The innovative lock-up devices (LUDs), manufactured by Colebrand Ltd in London, England, can be the solution to cut down the cost of wide-scale retrofits of bridges which are damaged by earthquakes. This device can serve as a temporary but a solid link between a bridge's deck and its supporting abutments or piers when a seismic activity occurs. Its piston-and-rod configuration inside a compound-filled non-corrosive cylinder allows the device to conform with the movements of the bridge during earthquakes. LUDs can be more effective when installed at bridge's piers with sliding bearings.
