High blood pressure and the slave trade

Article Abstract:

One explanation for the relatively high rate of hypertension in African Americans is because of the stress which their ancestors experienced during the voyage from Africa to America. However, it cannot be proven that salt-wasting conditions changed their genes and made them more susceptible to hypertension.

The puzzle of hypertension in African-Americans

Article Abstract:

Scientists are baffled by the relatively high percentage of hypertension in African Americans compared to Africans in other countries. This cannot be explained merely by genetic issues but rather through a combination of external factors, internal physiology and the genes for regulating blood pressure.
