Evidence for a decline in atmospheric emissions of PCDD/Fs in the U.K

Article Abstract:

Contemporary rural UK herbage PCDD/F concentrations have decreased eight-fold since they reached their peak in 1961-1965. Inferring from this decline, air concentrations will also have decreased over the period. Samples of PCDD/F concentrations taken between 1991-1993 were only slightly higher than the pre-1900 level. By inference, changes in the concentrations and mixture of PCDD/Fs are indicative of changes in atmospheric deposition. With careful interpretation, they may also reflect broad changes in PCDD/F sources to the atmosphere. These findings were gleaned from a study of archived herbage collected between 1861 and 1993 from a rural southeast England site.

Isotopic character of lead deposited from the atmosphere at a grassland site in the United Kingdom since 1860

Article Abstract:

The distribution and accumulation of lead (Pb) in U.K. soils were investigated using lead isotope analysis. The results showed that lead deposited from the atmosphere is the highest source of lead in surface soils. However, there has been a steady reduction in the 206Pb/207Pb ratio over the period of 130 years due to changes in the sources of lead-containing ores or coal or changes in the atmospheric inputs of different lead sources.

Exploring the balance between sources, deposition, and the environmental burden of PCDD/Fs in the U.K. terrestrial environment: an aid to identifying uncertainties and research needs

Article Abstract:

A research study was done in the United Kingdom aimed at improving knowledge on polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and on developing a strategy for PCDD/F reduction in the environment. The research involved the study of PCDD/F emissions, the balance between the PCDD/Fs atmospheric emissions and deposition, and the current problem of PCDD/Fs in relation to historical information.
