Repairing the Genome's Spelling Mistakes

Article Abstract:

Scientists are researching ways to fix errors in flawed genes, which cause hereditary diseases, such as sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis. A new gene therapy strategy called chimeraplasty is discussed. The process could change the face of genetic engineering, but it is still too early to see if it can be used on mammalian cells.

New lead to safer marrow transplants

Article Abstract:

Researchers have developed a gene therapy to combat the graft-versus-host disease that often occurs following bone marrow transplants. The transplant cells are genetically engineered to allow doctors to kill them selectively if they begin to attack the recipient's own tissues.
