Metal distribution in Clark Fork River sediments

Article Abstract:

Sediments from the Clark Fork River bed are sampled with a sediment freeze core apparatus that can test both cobbles and finer particles. A map of the sampling area, explanation of the sampling apparatus, and graphs of the metal load of the sediments are included.

New method for the direct determination of dissolved Fe(III) concentration in acid mine waters

Article Abstract:

Researchers at the U.S. Geological Survey developed a new method for directly determining the amount of Fe(III) in acid mine water. Current colorimetric detection methods must compute the difference between total dissolved Fe and dissolved Fe(II). These methods are time consuming and are not easily performed in the field. Additionally, the methods are not reliable for testing acid mine water because the water could be contaminated with other metals. To what extent these metals might produce false data is unknown, as no tests have been performed. The new test uses catechols and hydroxamates, which have a high selectivity for Fe(III), and it is inexpensive.
