Fast forms

Article Abstract:

Manufacturing companies are discovering the advantages of rapid prototyping. Siemens Measurements employed computer-aided design and rapid prototyping (RP) technology to develop its smartcard meter. RP allowed Siemens to produce the vacuum cast models in identical materials. The company was also able to test client reactions by presenting to them the models. Similarly, automotive parts manufacturer TBA Composites employed RP to prototype shields for major automobile companies with the advantage of fast response to customer requests.

Cutting IT fine

Article Abstract:

Information technology (IT) systems are essential in reducing product development timescales to minimize costs. Important IT systems include computer-aided-design systems which can tackle design iterations based on incomplete, provisional geometries, knowledge-based systems which can be used to store rules on product design and related manufacturing procedures, and rapid prototyping to produce accurate physical three-dimensional images of the actual product for visual evaluation and form-fit testing.
