Fatty acids as sensitive tracers of sewage sludge carbon in a deep-sea ecosystem

Article Abstract:

Fatty acids were used to evaluate the effects of sewage sludge on the benthic inhabitants of deep-sea ecosystems. The stable composition and relative abundance of the fatty acids 18:2(n-6) and 20:5(n-3) have been used to test the effects of sewage sludge on the sea urchin Echinus affinus. Study showed E. affinus collected from a sewage sludge-affected sea floor had more quantities of the 18:2(n-6) fatty acid in its tissues compared with urchins collected from a nearby, but unaffected, sea floor locality.

Critical conditions for CO2 hydrate films to rest on submarine CO2 pond surfaces: a mechanistic study

Article Abstract:

An investigation into the properties of the hydrate films formed at the horizontal interface between seawater and denser liquid CO2 under high pressures showed that the strength of the film is based on the static force balance between the gravitational forces and the interfacial tension force acting on each hydrate film. The investigation opens up the possibility of storing CO2 on the seafloor.
