Finding pictures on the Web

Article Abstract:

Search engines are under developed to increase their ability to find graphic information on the Internet. Current search engines rely on text captions to access graphic information. Future developments would incorporate the ability to compare various visual features, such as contrast, coarseness, directionality, shapes and color.

Power pack: batteries are the bottleneck for portable electronics

Article Abstract:

The long product cycle of batteries, which can 10 years or more, is delaying the development of portable office equipment. Electrochemists hope that lithium batteries will be able to provide higher capacity and the ability to be recharged.

Finding fault: can seismologists predict earthquakes?

Article Abstract:

Scientists have used the seismic gap theory to devise schemes for predicting earthquakes for about 100 years, but research published in Dec 1991 has challenged the accuracy of that theory. Research on the seismic gap theory is discussed.
