From Eastern Quakes to a Warming's Icy Clues

Article Abstract:

At the 1998 fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union researchers looked at the New Madrid fault in southeastern Missouri and the correlation of climatic change in Greenland and tropical regions. The New Madrid area, which suffered a series of devastating quakes in 1811-12, appears to be stable. Examination of bubbles trapped in the Greenland ice sheet reveal that climactic events in the tropics have an effect on warming in Greenland.

Requiem for Life on Mars? Support for Microbes Fades

Article Abstract:

Most scientists have concluded that research has weakened the hypothesis that microscopic features in a Martian meteorite were signs of ancient life on Mars. The originators of the hypothesis have withdrawn much of their evidence but are still confident that the meteorites contain traces of life.

Acid Rain Control: Success on the Cheap

Article Abstract:

Acid rain, once a major environmental concern, is a declining worry as the causing chemical agents have been reduced in half. Controlling acid rain was projected to cost the government up to $10 billion a year, but has been surprisingly cheaper at a cost of $1 billion a year.
