Function Is Structure

Article Abstract:

The crystal structure of the 70S bacterial ribosome and its two component subunits are reported in four papers, two in a recent issue of Nature and two in this issue of Science. Three types of ribosomal RNA and 54 different proteins make up the large (50S) and small (30S) subunits of the ribosome.

The role of water in hemoglobin function and stability

Article Abstract:

Two methods for estimating changes in hemoglobin hydration upon switching functional state are compared. The methods for estimating hemoglobin hydration changes yielded 60 and 75 water molecules per tetramer, respectively.

Use of NMR to detect water within nonpolar protein cavities

Article Abstract:

The solvent apparently detected by NMR in the hydrophobic cavity on human interleukin-1-beta may actually be water molecules bound elsewhere in the protein. Results of research using NMR are discussed.
