Gas-phase heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation of ethanol: pathways and kinetic modeling

Article Abstract:

The rate of reaction of the conversion of ethanol to carbon dioxide in the presence of titanium dioxide as catalyst, the intermediates involved in the reaction, and the reaction channels from which the intermediates were formed were investigated. The results revealed that the rate of reaction of ethanol is affected by the adsorption of intermediates on the catalyst surface. Four major intermediates were identified: acetaldehyde, acetic acid, formaldehyde and formic acid. A proposed pathway in which the reaction occurred is presented.

Mineralization of bacterial cell mass on a photocatalytic surface in air

Article Abstract:

Investigations into the use of titanium dioxide as a mineralization agent for bacterial contaminants showed that the effectivity of a titanium dioxide coated surface increases with exposure to ultraviolet light. Radioactive labelling of carbon showed that bacteria trapped in the titanium dioxide-coated surface was mineralized, releasing carbon dioxide, that is consistent with the mass balance of the trapped bacteria.

Gas-phase photocatalytic oxidation of trichloroethylene over TiO2: products and mechanisms

Article Abstract:

The potential of titanium dioxide for the gas-phase photocatalytic oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE) is discussed. A molecular beam mass spectrometer and a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer were used as the direct sampling instruments for measuring the oxidative destruction rates of the TCE and for monitoring intermediate formations. Large amounts of TCE destruction were achieved.
