Gene transfer in the environment

Article Abstract:

Consumer concerns regarding genetically modified organisms has led farmers and the Association of Official Seed Certifying Agencies to investigate cross-pollination prevention strategies. In addition, isolation distance standards based upon antiquated data, lack of legal authority by federal regulatory agencies, and lack of knowledge regarding pollen movement have also caused industry concerns. A sidebar discussion of Jerry Kermicle's research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison regarding cross-fertilization of genetically modified and non-genetically modified corn is included.

Characterizing fine, airborne particulate matter

Article Abstract:

The United States Environmental Protection Agency began Supersite projects in Atlanta and Fresno in order to survey new technologies for monitoring particulate air matter less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. Technologies include mass spectrometry and continuous or semicontinuous chemical species-specific analyzers. Supersites will continue through 2005 and will help the EPA with air quality standards.
