Genetic 'master switch' for left-right symmetry found

Article Abstract:

Researchers have accidentally discovered a gene that is central in the determination of organ positioning in mice and perhaps other vertebrates. When the researchers injected a tyrosine gene in albino mice to create pigmented mice, they discovered that organ positioning was altered.

Should dying patients receive untested genetic methods?

Article Abstract:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee (RAC) recommended that genetic treatments for dying patients should be approved through an internal NIH review process when the RAC cannot meet quickly enough to evaluate the therapy.

When proteins receive deadly messages at birth

Article Abstract:

Defective polypeptides expressed by defective messenger-RNA are among the proteins that cannot be repaired. A quality-control mechanism discovered by Kenneth Keiler that tags aberrant polypeptides for destruction, is described.
