Grad schools ratings rankle

Article Abstract:

Familiar institutions top the lists of the National Research Council's survey of PhD programs in science, engineering and the humanities, its first since 1982. Deans of small, new and nontraditional programs fear administrators will use the rankings to cut budgets or entire departments.

Global nitrogen overload problem grows critical

Article Abstract:

New research shows that much of the Earth's land can no longer absorb the growing levels of fixed nitrogen. Originating from nitrogen fertilizers and oxides released by cars, the influx is causing coastal algal blooms and loss of soil nutrients as well as damaging biodiversity.
