Hard-headed carpenters: woodpeckers really know how to use their noggins

Article Abstract:

Woodpeckers are some of the most interesting members of the aves due to their skills in carpentry, unique anatomical structure and characteristics. There are 14 species of woodpeckers found in Canada, including the highly unusual three-toed woodpeckers which are a rare treat for birdwatchers during winter.

Article Abstract:

The gray jay of Canada is able to survive harsh winter months by storing up food supplies in various locations that are preserved by the bird's saliva. The gray jay is also able to lower its body temperature to conserve heat and heat retention is effected by the bird's plush feather coat.

Article Abstract:

Some of the best-known birders in Canada share their favorite locations for bird watching. Lakes, national parks, islands and rivers are rich sources of many different species. Sewage lagoons and landfill sites are some of the more unusual venues included.
