Histone deacetylase: a regulator of transcription

Article Abstract:

The cloning of histone deacetylase provides a dynamic illustration of the selective impact of histone mutations on gene expression. The research may lead to a better understanding of how dynamic chromatin structural transitions can be targeted to specific chromosomal regions.

Linker histones, DNA's protein custodians, gain new respect

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that the role linker histones play in the management of DNA is more complex than previously believed. The discovery that some linker histones are located inside DNA coils supports the idea that some histones promote as well as block gene activation.

Transcription factor IIA: a structure with multiple functions

Article Abstract:

Researchers led by James Geiger have decoded the crystal structure of a core component of the machinery of genetic transcription. The component is a complex of DNA, TATA-binding protein and transcription factor IIA (TFIIA). The activity of TFIIA is discussed.
