Hubble Telescope Settles Cosmic Distance Debate--Or Does It?

Article Abstract:

The discovery of the Hubble constant has prompted discussion on whether the value has been indeed found. Astronomers can determine the rate in which the universe is expanding from studying this constant, but some feel that it is extremely hard to measure the exact distances between galaxies. The project and its findings are given.

Battle lines shift in the great cosmic distance dispute

Article Abstract:

Astronomers attending the Aspen Winter Physics conference partially resolved the debate about the size of the universe. Robert Kirshner revised his calculation of the Hubble constant upward, supporting the small- rather than large-universe theory.

Physics: a prize for patient listening

Article Abstract:

Astronomers Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse won the 1993 Nobel Prize in physics for their radio monitoring of a binary pulsar that confirmed Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity.
