Impact of oxygenated gasoline use on California light-duty vehicle emissions

Article Abstract:

The impact of the use of oxygenated gasoline on light-duty vehicle emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), nitogen oxide (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC) was investigated by measuring emissions at the Caldecott Tunnel. It was shown that CO and VOC emission rates decreased between Aug. and Oct. 1994 when the average oxygen content of gasoline was increased. No change was seen with NOx emissions.

Measurement of nitrous acid in motor vehicle exhaust

Article Abstract:

Nitrous acid (HONO) is an air pollutant produced by motor vehicle emissions. It is also a byproduct of the secondary formation of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Previous studies have shown that HONO has adverse effects on the environment and on human health. The measurement of HONO and NOx emissions from vehicles passing through the Caldecott Tunnel in the Berkeley, CA Hills during summer 1995 showed that the average HONO concentrations in tunnel exhaust and background air were 6.9+/- 1.4 and 0.7+/- 0.3 ppb, respectively. The average HONO concentration in motor vehicle emissions was 2.9+/- 0.5 x 10(super3).
