In situ measurement of offective vapor-phase porous media diffusion coefficients

Article Abstract:

A procedure for measuring the effective vapor-phase porous medium diffusion coefficient (Dv,eff) in situ, considers transient changes in volume-averaged concentrations of an inert tracer gas, instead of changes in point concentration measurements. In addition, measurements are made over intermediate time frames, specifically minutes to hours, and the process is easily modified to probe scales ranging from approximately 0.1 m to 1 m. This procedure may prove valuable for many applications, including risk-based volatilization and vapor migration calculations and remediation performance estimates.

Comment:

An alternative procedure for measuring the effective vapor-phase porous medium diffusion coefficient in situ is presented

Long-term trends of particulate mutagenic activity in the atmosphere of Sapporo. 1. Determination of mutagenic activity by the conventional tester strains TA98 and TA100 during an 18-year period (1974-1992)

Article Abstract:

Ames Salmonella mutagenicity bioassay experiments raise questions on the use of benzo(a)pyrene's (BaP) as a long-term indicator of air pollution effects on human health. Experiments were conducted in Sapporo during an 18 year period using TA98 and TA100 and results show that there was almost no change in the exposure to the amount of mutagenic substances as a whole despite BaP reductions of 25% to 20% and indirect mutagenic activity reductions of 66% to 50%.
