Real-time measurement of correlated size and composition profiles of individual atmospheric aerosol particles

Article Abstract:

The size and chemical composition of individual atmospheric aerosol particles were characterized real-time using aerosol time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Size information was obtained by first using a unique dual-laser aerodynamic particle sizing system. Subsequent measurements using laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight spectrometry showed that 50-100 particles per minute, with a maximum of 600 particles per minute, can be characterized at ambient concentrations.

Global HCH usage with 1 degree x 1 degree longitude/latitude resolution

Article Abstract:

Data from the global hexachlorocychlohexane (HCH) usage from 1980-1990 indicated the presence of high levels of HCH from Calcutta, India which is equivalent to 11,000 nanograms per cubic meters in air. The high levels of HCH in India was attributed to the widespread use of the compound from 180-1990. Furthermore, the ban on HCH led to a marked decrease in atmospheric alpha- and gamma-HCH levels in the Canadian and Norwegian Artic regions.

Phase distribution of nicotine in real environments as determined by two sampling methods

Article Abstract:

Two sampling methods were used to differentiate between gas-phase amd particle-bound nicotine in environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). In the first method, a filter/filter system was used to collect fresh ETS nicotine. The second method relied on a denuder/filter system to collect nicotine samples. Results indicate that the use of a denuder/filter system enhanced the method's ability to collect nicotine as a gas phase component.
