Insects of Generation X

Article Abstract:

The periodical cicada recently made an appearance at a park in New Haven, CT, much to the delight of entomologists at nearby Yale University. This cicada species is the longest-living insect in the world, though it spends most of its 17-year life underground before surfacing for a few weeks.

A spinning crystal ball: seismologists discover that the inner core rotates

Article Abstract:

Researchers have proposed that the inner core of the earth is a massive spinning crystal exceeding 2,400 kilometers in diameter. An anisotropic grain created variations in earthquake waves passing through the center of the earth, thus debunking earlier theories supporting an isotropic core.
