International POPs treaty faces implementation hurdles

Article Abstract:

The United Nations Environment Programme has convened 92 countries to address the issue of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and its global implications. The meeting discussed the initial steps that will be taken by the group to address 12 critical POPs, whose ubiquity stems from their use as agricultural pesticides. The groups first activity is to define the parameters that would qualify them as POPs and add additional dimensions in their qualifications as POPs such as their potential for global dispersion through hydrologic, atmospheric or biological means. This would augment the existing criteria used which includes toxicity, persistence, bioaccumulability and transport potential.

Kyoto Protocol carbon targets could be met with "forest credits"

Article Abstract:

Environmental groups and policy analysts express doubt about the feasibility of the so-called forest credit plan, as proposed in the Kyoto Protocol, whereby countries will be allowed to plant trees to help meet their carbon dioxide emission targets. The provision is one of the most contentious features of the international climate change treaty agreed to by last December 1997. Many are concerned about the possibility of circumventing the said provision by planting trees to avoid instituting measures to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
