International environmental management standard advances

Article Abstract:

The development of international standards for environmental management systems advances following a meeting of the International Organization Technical Committee 207 in Oslo, Norway, on July 1995. The committee is tasked to develop some 25 standards on areas including environmental management, environmental auditing, life cycle analysis, environmental labeling and environmental product standards. It expects to determine the extent of ISO 14000's coverage on its next meeting in May 1996 in Durban, South Africa.

Environmental taxes gaining ground in Europe

Article Abstract:

The environmental taxes adopted by several European countries have ideally made polluters pay for the cost of regulating emissions. The Copenhagen, Denmark-based European Environment Agency reports that the "green taxes" are revenue-producing and can have an expanded use on the national and European Union (EU) level. It is noted that newly industrialized countries such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore are instituting similar energy and waste taxes.

Phthalate standard endorsed by industry

Article Abstract:

Toy and chemical manufacturers in Europe support the use of a new test that can determine the amounts of phthalate leaching from plastics, and they hope that the European Union (EU) will establish legislation setting limits to phthalate leaching. Such legislation would override individual EU-country bans for phthalate in plastic toys.
