Introduction: informal information flow

Article Abstract:

Informal information is information for institutions which is not organized. It is argued that informal information is important in many fields and that authors in these fields treat it differently. Its disorganized nature makes it difficult to be controlled. However, it is shown that informal information flow could be managed but would take considerable skill. Informal information flow is applicable to transactions which require obtaining information. It gives a realistic view of the internal and external environment of the organization.

Informal information flow and strategy in the international firm

Article Abstract:

Formal information is needed in organizations and its importance goesbeyond supporting its operations. However, they do not completely provide senior management the required information for formulating strategies. The acquisition of information through informal means is therefore also necessary. A comparative analysis of formal and informal acquisition of information indicates that formal mechanisms seem to hinder and distort informal information which deprive senior managers of important information in formulating strategies.

Formal collaboration and informal information flow

Article Abstract:

Firms collaborate to enjoy both technological and research and developement benefits. While governments are more open to this type of agreement, firms must consider its effects on competition and innovation. Firms may impair their information networks by entering collaborative agreements. Collaboration also reduces the incentive to compete and consequently, this decreases the incentive to innovate.
