It's in the can: Efficient materials usage is very important to high volume industries such as drinks can manufacture

Article Abstract:

Sheet aluminium is widely used in the production of drinks cans, and there is much emphasis on the material's deep drawing characteristics without compromising production costs. Anisotropy in the material results in waves when cups are deep drawn, and the position and size of the waves, or ears, provides an indication of the deep drawing properties. Huxley Bertram Engineering was approached to develop a fast, accurate method of measuring, analyzing and recording earing. An earing measuring unit was developed and data analysis occurs as soon as the measurement cycle is completed.

Test matches

Article Abstract:

Harmonization of materials testing has been made essential due to cost factors and the emerging European Single Market. The most common set of required data includes preliminary materials selection data. A British Plastics Federation report indicates that any harmonization process involves a degree of compromise and not all of the tests listed in the standards for comparable data are ideal for all materials.

Non-destructive testing

Article Abstract:

Non-destructive testing (NDT) of materials has been revolutionized due to requirements such as quality control during production and regular inspection during service, driven by the sensitivity needs of new failure modes of materials. The history of NDT that originated from X-radiography, risk-based inspection for a cost-efficient management, and technological innovations for material testing are discussed.
