Japanese innovations in advanced technologies: an analysis of functional integration

Article Abstract:

The transition from being just 'imitators' to being 'innovators' was achieved by Japanese companies during the 1980s. The process of integration is analyzed with special focus on the innovations made in advanced technology industries. Japanese innovation processes involve an emphasis on commercial application, rapid technology transfer, dynamic improvements, multiple competencies, morphogenetic logic, integrated marketing and organizational learning. The experiences of Hitachi Ltd and Nippon Steel Corp are presented along with a conceptual model of Japanese corporate innovations.
