Key protein found for brain's dopamine-producing neurons

Article Abstract:

Swedish researchers Thomas Perlmann and Lars Olson found that the gene Nurr1 and the protein it codes for are essential for development of dopamine- producing brain cells. The findings could lead to treatment or prevention of Parkinson's disease, which results from degeneration of the dopamine cells.

Gene found for the fading eyesight of old age

Article Abstract:

Research has revealed a genetic cause for the uncorrectable vision disorder resulting from macular degeneration. A mutation in the gene responsible for the shuttling of moleucles across the membranes of retinal cells could be linked to 16% of cases of vision loss in the elderly.

Long-sought H-Y antigen found

Article Abstract:

Researchers have discovered the genetic factor that causes females to reject tissue transplanted from males. The factor, a short antigen called the H-Y antigen, is controlled by a gene called SMCY located on the Y chromosome of males.
