The "finish" of consciousness: Emily Dickinson and Georgia O'Keeffe

Article Abstract:

The abstract quality in Georgia O'Keefe's paintings and in Emily Dickinson's poetry stem from their efforts to represent consciousness. Both these women, who worked at around the same time, focussed on the pure consciousness and so there is an apparent lack of closure. Their shared avoidance of emotional entanglements makes their very intense works strangely detached and unmoving.

Killer kangaroos and other murderous marsupials

Article Abstract:

Ancient Australia was once home to some of the most ferocious and strange marsupials, a prime example of which was the Powerful-Toothed Giant Rat-kangaroo. Large warm-blooded carnivores lurked in Australian forests such as the giant monitor lizard, the Tasmanian Devil, the Spotted-Tailed Quoll and the Musky Rat-kangaroo.

Japanese companies are changing the way they reward employees who develop profitable patents. The move follows a lawsuit from former Nichi employee Shuji Nakamura, who invented blue light-emitting diodes, and is also due to firms wanting to retain talented staff.
