Salahuddin pleads guilty

Article Abstract:

Syed Zaki Salahuddin, an AIDS researcher who worked in the laboratory of Robert C. Gallo at the National Institutes of Health, has pleaded guilty to charges he funneled contracts from Gallo's lab to a private company, Pan-Data. Salahuddin's wife owned stock in the company, and payments he received from Pan-Data were used to paint his house and pay off a second mortgage. The scientist initially invoked the Fifth Amendment during hearings before the House subcommittee on oversight and investigations. The prosecution recommended a fine in the amount of $12,000 (equivalent of the amount Salahuddin received illegally) and 1,750 hours of public service. This time may be spent doing research on weekends concerning human herpes virus 6, Salahuddin's area of expertise. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
