Defense Research Technologies has developed a non-electrical sound-amplification system which uses 'acousto-fluidic' technology. The system is based on the principle that sound travels faster when wind-born, therefore giving it the monicker 'wind phone.' The system has already found a unique application in synagogues, since Jewish law forbids the use of electricity during the Sabbath or other holy days.

A recent experiment produced new insight into the known effects of sound on the dynamics of cracks in fractured materials. The experiment demonstrated the ability to quantitatively monitor the effect of sound as a function of time as a crack progresses and that a small amount of acoustic energy can greatly affect fracture dynamics.
