Chips aren't everything

Article Abstract:

Engineering computer users should choose computer hardware that matches their computer system in terms of several criteria. The use of either a Pentium or a Pentium Pro chip depends on the processor chip architecture of the system. Graphics quality and speed are factors that are also dependent on whether the system uses a 16-bit or a 32-bit configuration. Finally, it is important to note that the use of Unix systems in engineering entails more 'real work' for engineers because a Unix environment requires specially trained users.

Everything old is new again

Article Abstract:

Chicago,IL's Green Line has undergone a two-year, $400-million renovation. The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA)-operated Green Line is a 20-mile connection between the downtown Loop and the South and Westsides. The CTA opted to shut down the Green Line and provide substitute bus service rather than force riders to bear with up to five years of construction inconvenience. The approach reduced construction time by half while saving more than two-thirds of project cost.

Synchronous spawning: when timing is everything

Article Abstract:

Field research has discovered that calcified green seaweeds have the ability to time vital life functions to the time of day most beneficial for each activity. They can produce gametangia at night and release gametes at species-specific and gender-specific times the next day.
