Laboratory accreditation conference declared a success

Article Abstract:

The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) was formally created in Feb. 1995 with the approval of an interim constitution at an open meeting attended by more than 600 people. NELAC is tasked to design a voluntary national program for environmental laboratory accreditation which will involve both the private sector and the regulators. Among the various issues which will be tackled by NESLAC in connection with the program is the Good Laboratory Program, a project which seeks to serve the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act.

EMAP shifts focus to research

Article Abstract:

The EPA announced plans to downscale its Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP) and concentrate it instead on research efforts. EMAP was established as a nationwide program for monitoring changes in selected indicators by evaluating ecological resources. EPA officials stated that they did not have the $100 million required for an effective EMAP system. EMAP will instead be focused on research to determine what should be monitored and why.
