Laboratory workhorse decoded

Article Abstract:

The decoding of the genome of Escherichia coli is significant because scientists have obtained more genetic and metabolic information about E. coli than about any other organism. The mapping of the organism's 4288 genes will help scientists determine how such organisms evolve and function.

Seeking life's bare (genetic) necessities

Article Abstract:

One research team at the 1996 Genome Mapping and Sequencing meeting reported that just 250 genes can sustain a living organism, while another researcher stated the figure as closer to 800. Defining the minimum set will help to determine the genes that make each organism unique.

DNA sequencers' trial by fire

Article Abstract:

The international effort to sequence the human genome by the year 2005 has been struggling. Although the 15-year Human Genome Project has reached its midpoint, research is just starting to sequence the genome on a large scale.
