Local sources: Small scale distributed power generation may replace national electricity grids

Article Abstract:

The future of power generation is in small scale generating equipment located close to where people live and work, providing electricity, hot water, air conditioning and space heating, according to Professor Colin Beasant. He believes there are efficiency benefits to be had from distributed power generation such as lower transmission losses. He has started the Turbo Genset Company to market a new design of high speed alternator, which can be fitted to a small gas turbine engine, leading to a compact and robust generator unit.

Hard decisions: There is a diverse range of strategies available to companies needing a new IT infrastructure

Article Abstract:

The process of installing a large and expensive computer system is difficult for most companies, and involves several basic decisions. Sun Microsystems had two reasons for installing a major new IT infrastructure, is existing mainframe system was running out of capacity and was not Y2K compliant. It decided on the 'big bang approach, installing the new system and switching over suddenly to the new system.
