Influences of natural colloids on metal bioavailability to two marine bivalves

Article Abstract:

The bioavailability of Cd, Cr(III), and Zn was examined in mussel Perna viridis and clam Ruditapes philippinarum by exposing them to radiolabeled colloids. The colloidal-bound metals were bioavailable, but the influences that made binding on metal uptake possible varied between the metals and between the mussel and the clam. The experiment is described.

Long-term accumulation of individual PCBs, dioxins, furans, and trace metals in Asiatic clams from the Rio de la Plata Estuary, Argentina

Article Abstract:

The long-term accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Asiatic clams from the Rio dela Plata Estuary in Argentina, which were of increasing size covering a 0.5-4-year growth period, was found to be congener-specific and similar to compound hydrophobicity and stereochemistry. Copper (Cu), on the other hand, is the only trace metal that exhibited consistent increasing trend with clam size indicating continuous passive bioaccumulation.
