Main line mending

Article Abstract:

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and the Providence Water Supply Board are currently rehabilitating their water supply lines. The two agencies are using new repair methods, materials and processes but both have implemented extensive pipeline inspection and maintenance programs. The WSSC pipeline was built in the late 1970s from pipe made with inadequate prestressing wire. Providence Water is repairing a portion of its pipeline that burst in 1996. The structural support of its smaller pipeline was stablized so water would continue to flow to customers while two 16-ft sections were also replaced.

I.T.S. on the way

Article Abstract:

Transportation departments are increasingly installing new technologies which enable them to speed transport flows and increase highway capacities. These intelligent transportation systems (ITSs) include electronic toll collections, video and sensor technologies to detect accidents, and information systems to warn drivers of delays ahead. However, some civil engineers feel that ITS is only a part of traffic engineering, and that traffic expertise is being overlooked as transportation departments work with electronic and computer personnel in the development of ITS.

The San Francisco connection

Article Abstract:

The American Society of Civil Engineers has awarded its 1998 Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement Merit Award to the builders of the San Francisco Muni Metro Turnback project. The Muni Metro project entailed the construction of twin, steel-lined tunnels and a connecting concrete box structure. It handled admirably the problems of boring tunnels through loose, debris-filled soil above existing tunnels and building the box structure within 30 feet of historic building with weakened foundations.
