Riding the technology wave

Article Abstract:

Rapid developments in the computer industry have caused some civil engineering firms to assess their information technology (IT) strategies. Some firms are unmindful of the plunging prices and are constantly upgrading their machines via agreements with computer leasing companies. Other firms are opting to wait for the introduction of Windows NT 5.0 instead of using Windows 98. The growing popularity of the Internet has also influenced the IT strategies of some firms to facilitate information dissemination requirements of their various projects.

Crowning achievement

Article Abstract:

Germany's desire to rejuvenate its capital city of Berlin has prompted officials to place an emphasis on redeveloping Potsdamer Plaza among other activities. One of the most fascinating innovative structures being built in connection with Potsdamer Plaza's rejuvenation is the seven-piece Sony Center am Potsdamer Plaza, which is bound by an unusual roof. This elliptical, forum roof features teflon-coated fiberglass fabric and glass panels and weighs 920 Mg. It rests on seven points on four of the complex's seven buildings.

Keeping a low profile

Article Abstract:

The Admiral Clarey Bridge in Pearl Harbor, HI, is a recipient of an Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement merit award for 1999. The bridge was designed to have a low profile so as not to obscure the view of the memorial for the USS Arizona. It is made up of concrete sections supported by piles and spread footings with a 930 ft movable concrete pontoon resulting in a movable bridge. The pontoon slips under the eastern span to create a 650-ft wide navigable channel.
