Managing engineering design in complex supply chains

Article Abstract:

Four case studies concerning supplier-driven design, development and production functions are discussed. They describe several approaches to procurement and design management currently practiced by British Rail, Netherlands Railways, Rolls Royce and British Coal. In addition, they indicate that the best way to manage devolved design is to take into account an organization's position in the supply chain and its ability to handle change.
