Managing information technologies in the service sector in China: present state and outlook for the 1990s

Article Abstract:

China will seek to improve its telecommunications and information systems in order to develop several key industries that rely on such technology. Airlines will grow remarkably in the 1990's, with the number of passengers increasing from 14.4 million in 1988 to 60 million in 2000. In related developments, China will see its tourism industry prosper, which brought 31.6 million people to China in 1988, although 30 million of them were overseas Chinese. Banking will also need a strong telecommunications infrastructure. The government must standardize China's information hardware and software.

Trends in Eastern European telecommunications: the case of Poland

Article Abstract:

The future of Poland's telecommunications industry hinges on the government's ability to attract investment for microwave and satellite systems. Transmission quality can be greatly improved through development of a network of cellular communications, for both rural and urban areas. A fiber-optic cable will connect Poland with Scandinavia. The government must deregulate the industry, and separate it from the postal service. The tax codes must be changed to encourage investment. A microwave transmission network will be used for industrial regions, and for future development of ISDN.
