Match makers

Article Abstract:

The appeal of plastics owes much to the wide range of colors and special effects that are achievable, but color consistency can be an important problem. Plastics colorants are either organic or inorganic pigments, and dyes. A good colorant needs to be stable and able to maintain its color during processing. Color compounding requires the mixing of many pigments, usually with a base of carbon black or titanium oxide and products are supplied to moulders as liquid metered systems. Masterbatch maker Silvergate Plastics is developing a computerised Knowledge Based Expert System that will be able to produce exact color matches for its customers.
