Measured to the max

Article Abstract:

The critical role played by full-scale dynamic measurements in ensuring the reliability of new building designs and in analysing the present state of other existing structures is illustrated by three structural evaluation projects. These projects were classified as simple, complex and exotic structures. Based on these evidences, it is asserted that full-scale dynamic measurements can cost-effectively augment the method of numerical modeling of dynamic structures.

Copolymers replace concrete under acid tanks

Article Abstract:

Civil engineers used copolymer materials, instead of concrete, to replace an acid-damaged pump foundation and concrete slab around a small dike located at the AlliedSignal Fibers Division plant (Hopewell, VA). Concrete was removed from a larger area around the dike, new drains were installed, but work operations continued while the repairs were in progress. Concrete would have had a curing time that would have left the area vulnerable to further spill damage.

Casting hot and cold

Article Abstract:

Construction industry engineers building a concrete segmental bridge during the heat of summer in 1996 managed to prevent cement cracks through the use of water in a graduated cooling process. The Wabasha Street Bridge project continued casting superstructure segments throughout the extremely cold winter of 1996-1997 with the aid of box girder cross-sectioned pier tables.
